New to the Setouchi area — how do you prep for typhoons & heavy rain? A bit anxious

Just moved to the Setouchi region and it's beautiful, but I hear summer brings typhoons and heavy rain. Coming from a place that doesn't get these, I honestly don't know how to prepare. What's a realistic home kit — water, batteries, that hazard map thing (ハザードマップ)? When do you actually evacuate vs stay? How do you get warnings in English? Long-time residents here, please school this nervous newcomer. Better to ask before the season hits.
