If you have an offer near 中央線 (Shinjuku-Tachikawa axis): rent is ~15% cheaper west of 中野, but morning rush peak adds 25-40 min vs Yamanote line residence.
My rule of thumb for new hires:
- Under 30 + cost-sensitive → Chuo west (Koenji/Asagaya)
- Family or remote-flex → Yamanote (Mejiro/Komagome)
- Hybrid 2-3 days office → middle (Suginami/Setagaya)
Anyone made the wrong call and regretted it?
Fukushima here, never thought I'd weigh in on Tokyo commute. But last year my younger sister took a Shibuya offer and ended up in Setagaya per Jordan's logic. She's still happy.

Chiba dad chiming in: don't sleep on the JR Sobu line if you have to go Tokyo metro core. Cheaper than 中央 but covers similar geography for east-side jobs.

Lived in Asagaya 3 years, can confirm: morning rush brutal but evening commute home is actually pleasant because everyone disembarked earlier.
