Got my residence tax (住民税) bill this week and it's noticeably higher than last year. Took me a while to realize: it's based on LAST year's income, billed from June. So if you earned more in 2025, this June's bill reflects it.
Classic trap: first-year arrivals often get surprised in their SECOND June, because year one you had little/no prior-year income.

Yes you can usually pay in installments — the bill comes with 4 payment slips (4期), or you can switch to monthly 特別徴収 if employed (deducted from salary). If it's tough, go to the city tax office and ask about 分割/猶予 — they're used to it. Don't ignore it though, unpaid tax can bite you later.
